Newbourne Springs is a wooded valley with a spring-fed stream and small areas of fen, marsh and heath. Suffolk Wildlife Trust names Treecreeper and Goldcrest and describes Nightingale song in spring. A marked route lets visitors explore the habitat changes, but the terrain deserves attention even on a short outing. Boardwalk, gates, slopes and steps are part of the walk. Choose it for an unhurried woodland visit when those conditions suit your group, rather than assuming that a village-edge reserve will have a level path throughout.

When to go and where to look

Nightingale song makes spring the most focused birding season at Newbourne Springs, even though the Trust’s wider recommended visiting period extends from April to September. Follow the marked trail through the wooded valley and pause to listen around its changing woodland, spring-fed stream and small fen and marsh areas. Treecreeper and Goldcrest provide other possibilities while you wait. The route is not uniformly easy: narrow boardwalk, kissing gates, steep slopes and steps are all described, with damp sections possible throughout the year. Use the entrance car park for the public trail and keep away from nesting cover.
