Freshwater

Afton Marsh occupies the upper Western Yar near Freshwater Bay, with tall fen, shaded river, ponds and wet woodland. The council names Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Mallard among its breeding birds, making it a wetland stop with a different setting from the tidal estuary at Yarmouth. Footpath F36 follows the western edge of the south marsh, linking Blackbridge Road with Freshwater Bay. The northern permissive route is more vulnerable to flooding and can close for safety. Keep the visit to the public paths and check conditions rather than expecting access across the fen.
