Near Martin village
Martin Down is an extensive chalk grassland and scrub landscape where a walking visit can be shaped around open-country birds. Skylark, Yellowhammer and Linnet are named by Natural England and give a useful focus to a first visit without relying on rarer species. The reserve covers 342 hectares, so the parking choice and intended return route deserve attention. A slow walk beside scrub can complement time listening over the open turf. The Jubilee Trail and other public footpaths provide ways into the landscape, but a shorter section may suit a birdwatching stop better than attempting the whole reserve in one outing.
