Near Warnford
Old Winchester Hill combines chalk grassland with woodland and scrub around a prominent downland hill. Natural England names Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Blackcap in summer, giving a reason to pause along vegetated edges as well as enjoying the open ground. There are several ways to experience the site, and the hillfort approach should not be assumed to have the same access as every other route. The northern gate has arrangements for an easier-access trail, while the wider landscape includes slopes. Decide which walk suits your group and allow enough time to return to the same car park without hurrying through the best listening places.
