Rye Harbour village · TN31 7TX

Rye Harbour offers a coastal wetland visit with public trails, a Discovery Centre and five birdwatching hides. The Trust names Little Tern, Lapwing and Redshank among its birds, while its separate wildlife account describes breeding terns and waders. Choose the part of the reserve that suits your time: the beach reserve and Castle Water have different approaches. The short circular route passes three hides and is described as wheelchair and pushchair friendly. Use the marked paths and signed dog zones, leaving protected areas undisturbed. Village parking and the Discovery Centre close overnight even though the reserve itself remains open.

When to go and where to look

The Trust’s coastal wildlife account supports a breeding-season visit for Little Tern and other beach-reserve birds, with the hides offering a way to watch without entering protected nesting ground. Choose the short public loop if you want time at several hides rather than a long walk. Castle Water is a separate wetland choice, with reedbed viewing for Bearded Tit and other named birds; compare its approach with the beach route before setting out. Follow the marked seasonal dog restrictions. The reserve has no overnight closing time, but the village car park and Discovery Centre do close, so check the return arrangements.
