Blaydon, Gateshead
Shibdon Pond is a substantial wetland in the Blaydon area, with open water fringed by aquatic plants, willow and hawthorn. Durham Wildlife Trust records Teal, Snipe and Kingfisher here among a wider selection of wetland birds. Public paths give views around the pond, while a connecting route beside the railway passes under the A1 towards Shibdon Meadow. The pond and meadow are treated as one reserve visit. The meadow itself has no paths, so the useful birding route follows the established pond-side network and permitted connection rather than crossing the grassland.
