Menherion, between Redruth and Falmouth · TR16 6NW
Stithians Reservoir offers a substantial inland birding stop between Redruth and Falmouth, with designated nature-reserve areas at the Golden Lion and southern cut-offs. Cornwall Birds highlights late-summer and autumn waders when falling water exposes shallow muddy edges, including Common Sandpiper, Wood Sandpiper, Dunlin and Snipe. Three hides provide established watching points, while the activity centre offers a convenient public arrival with parking, café and toilets. Choose a hide or a suitable section of lakeside path for a shorter visit. The full circular route includes a busy roadside section without a pavement.
When to go and where to look
Late summer and early autumn are the county bird club’s main wader window, when falling reservoir levels expose shallow muddy edges near the causeways. Wood Sandpiper, Dunlin and Snipe are among the named possibilities; the actual feeding area depends on water levels. Concentrate on the Golden Lion and southern cut-off viewing hides rather than entering the protected reserve areas themselves. Golden Lion’s hide has a boardwalk approach and wheelchair and buggy access. A shorter hide-based session avoids committing to the full perimeter walk, whose southern section leaves the water and follows a road without a pavement. Check the current access map first.
