Highnam Woods is an ancient woodland reserve on the Severn Vale, with coppiced areas, older trees and spring flowers. Nightingale song is a particular attraction in spring, while Hawfinch and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker offer more elusive woodland watching. The circular walk gives time to listen among the trees rather than chase a long list. Access needs care: the reserve remains open to pedestrians, but its car park is normally locked outside booked events or group visits. Campbell Hide is unsafe and closed, so use the public woodland paths and do not approach that structure.

When to go and where to look

Highnam Woods offers different specialist interests across the year: the RSPB names spring and early-summer Nightingale, autumn and winter Hawfinch, and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Use the waymarked circuit and its public-path connection for a slow woodland watch, listening before moving between views. The retained notice says Campbell Hide is unstable and closed; do not approach or enter it, or assume a birding season implies its reopening. Birds may remain hidden in the canopy or coppice, so allow time without seeking a closer route through cover. Confirm current access before making a special journey.
