Birdwatching in County Fermanagh

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

County Fermanagh’s birding choices include mainland woodland and lakeshore routes at Lower Lough Erne, and a substantially more demanding upland visit at Aghatirourke. Castle Caldwell provides the straightforward mainland approach to the lough landscape. Rossergole Point looks over open water and islands, while Beech Wood Walk provides a separate public lakeshore route. The reserve’s island breeding colonies, including Sandwich Terns and sensitive waders, do not establish unrestricted access to the islands. Aghatirourke changes the setting to blanket bog, limestone grassland, mountain streams and upland heath. Red Grouse, Skylark, Meadow Pipit and Wheatear are among its birds, with Sand Martin in spring and raptors overhead in summer. Gortalughany viewpoint provides a roadside option; the waymarked hill route is wet and difficult and requires appropriate experience. The reserve has no hides or visitor facilities, pet dogs are prohibited, and the Geopark advises against continuing beyond the Boardwalk viewing platform. These are two distinct Fermanagh plans, not interchangeable walks simply because both include water or open views.
