West of Alkborough, Humber confluence
Alkborough Flats offers a large wetland landscape where the Trent and Ouse meet the Humber. Former farmland was opened to tidal water as part of a flood-management scheme, producing reedbed, marsh and pools. North Lincolnshire Council names Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit and Avocet among the birds here, alongside wintering wildfowl. Public paths and hides let visitors watch the habitats without entering them. Choose a settled visit rather than treating the site as a quick viewpoint from the village. Flooding and wet ground can affect the walk, and a broad panoramic view does not remove the need to follow the permitted routes.
When to go and where to look
Choose Alkborough for a substantial wetland visit rather than a brief roadside stop. The council describes reedbeds, wet grassland and intertidal habitat, with Marsh Harrier, Bearded Tit and Avocet among the named birds. Winter brings waterfowl, including Teal and Wigeon, but individual bird records remain possibilities rather than assurances. Start from the signed visitor parking and use public paths and hides to explore the changing views. After heavy rain, parts of the route may flood, so reconsider the walk if the ground is unsuitable. Keep out of reedbeds and flooded margins, and give wildlife space from the designated route.
