Lune Valley, between Aughton and Caton
Aughton Woods protects ancient woodland above the Lune Valley, with public access currently confined to its western end. Lancashire Wildlife Trust names Pied Flycatcher, Woodcock, Treecreeper and Nuthatch among the reserve's birds, providing a woodland alternative to the county's larger wetlands. The permitted route is a short loop through woodland and Lawson's Meadow, reached from the Lune Valley Ramble along part of the southern boundary. Use that route rather than planning a circuit through the whole reserve. The meadow viewpoint and changing woodland structure make a compact visit, without assuming every part of the woods is open.
