Between Golspie and Dornoch
Loch Fleet combines an estuary watch with dunes and sheltered pinewood. NatureScot names spring Osprey and autumn arrivals including Wigeon and Greylag Goose, giving different reasons to look across the tidal basin. Choose the public approach for the habitat you want: Balblair woods lead to a north-shore hide, while the Skelbo-side shore has a separate car park and no onward paths. A settled scan can reveal birds feeding and resting around the changing water. Give flocks and seals space, and let the state of the tide and the day's weather determine how long you remain at each view.
When to go and where to look
NatureScot highlights winter at Loch Fleet for hundreds of feeding and roosting waders and waterfowl, making that the clearest season for a substantial estuary watch. At low tide, scan the soft mud and exposed basin from established public ground; the changing water level will alter both the feeding areas and the distance to the birds. Osprey provides a separate named attraction rather than a guarantee of every visit. The pinewood paths and hide offer a contrast to the open estuary, while Littleferry has dune paths. Select a suitable public viewpoint and leave feeding flocks and seal sandbanks undisturbed.
