Near Dyffryn Ardudwy · LL44 2HA
Morfa Dyffryn has active dunes, open beach, seasonally flooded hollows and saltmarsh along the Ardudwy coast. Natural Resources Wales names Common Scoter offshore and Chough and Hen Harrier among its winter birds. The boardwalk from Traeth Benar car park provides a defined approach to the beach and a viewpoint with a picnic bench. Beyond that approach, the wider reserve is a shifting sand landscape rather than a surfaced walking circuit. Part of the beach is designated for naturists and signed accordingly; seasonal lead rules protect birds using the beach and dunes.
When to go and where to look
Winter gives Morfa Dyffryn its clearest birdwatching focus. Natural Resources Wales describes large Common Scoter rafts offshore, with grebes and divers also possible over the sea and Chough and Hen Harrier around the reserve. Begin with the wooden boardwalk from Traeth Benar car park and scan from the beach-end viewpoint before deciding on a longer walk. The sand flats and saltmarsh provide feeding habitat, so avoid disturbing birds while changing position. Shifting dunes are different terrain from the boardwalk. Follow current safety notices, keep clear of livestock and respect the signed naturist beach and seasonal dog restrictions.
