Harlech · LL46 2UG
Morfa Harlech combines a growing dune system with beach, saltmarsh and the Dwyryd estuary. Natural Resources Wales names Common Scoter offshore and Chough and Merlin among the reserve’s winter birds. Public access starts from Min y Don car park, with a footpath to the beach and a right turn along the shore towards the reserve. The open coast offers a different view from the inland wooded valleys of Gwynedd. Parts of the dunes are fenced for grazing or plant protection, so a visit needs to follow the permitted routes.
When to go and where to look
Winter brings Morfa Harlech’s clearest birding focus, with Common Scoter flocks offshore and Chough and Merlin among the birds named by Natural Resources Wales. Compare the sea with the beach and Dwyryd feeding grounds from permitted routes, allowing time to scan rather than walking continuously through the dunes. Start at Min y Don, follow the public footpath to the beach and turn right towards the reserve. Grazing and fragile plants mean some areas are fenced, so those sections are not shortcuts to a closer view. Keep dogs on leads around the saltmarsh and estuary during autumn and winter, protecting resting and feeding birds.
