Boroughbridge Road, Ripon
Ripon City Wetlands gives visitors an out-and-back birding walk beside lakes and reeds near the racecourse. The Trust’s spring highlights name Sand Martin, Willow Warbler and Sedge Warbler. Take time at a public viewing place and compare the birds already present before walking farther. Remember that the return uses the same route, so leave enough energy and daylight for it. The canal towpath provides a pedestrian approach when the visitor car park is closed. Follow current signs and check the operator’s notices, as flooding can change access.
When to go and where to look
The Trust recommends Ripon City Wetlands throughout the year, with spring reedbed song and autumn waterbirds giving different reasons to pause. Bittern and Avocet are among its named wetland specialities, while spring Little Ringed Plover and summer Green Sandpiper add passage interest. Follow the marked out-and-back trail to the Riverside Lagoon screen, continuing towards the Canal Reedbed Hide only if time and conditions suit. There is no circular route, and the return follows the same approach. The Ure can flood the reserve and trigger closures, so check notices before travelling. When the racecourse car park is closed, pedestrian access is from the canal towpath between dawn and dusk.
