Mainland coast opposite St Mary’s Island, Whitley Bay
St Mary’s coastal reserve combines a mainland wetland and rocky shore opposite the lighthouse island. RSPB Newcastle’s visit on 4 January 2023 recorded Purple Sandpiper, Turnstone and Redshank in this area. Those observations document a winter visit rather than guarantee a repeat sighting. Begin on the mainland public paths and watch the shore without moving birds from their feeding or resting places. The island adds an optional extension only when the tidal causeway is safely open. The useful birding destination is the connected coastal reserve, not a drive across to the lighthouse.

Getting there: Arrive at the mainland St Mary’s parking area off the coastal road near Whitley Bay. The pin is a published south car park landmark, well short of the island; it does not imply vehicle access across the causeway. Check the official visitor information and tide arrangements before travel, even for a short visit.
