North Street, Stanground, Peterborough

Stanground Wash is a distinct wetland area beside the Back River, separated from the wider Nene Washes by the railway. The Wildlife Trust names Snipe, Redshank and Peregrine in its visitor account. Winter flooding provides shallow-water habitat, while cattle grazing keeps the summer grassland varied. The raised bank is drier than the wash itself, but some paths are faint or little used. Do not stray onto the railway: use only the reserve's authorised routes, and choose a visit that suits the wet conditions underfoot.
