Dunwich Road, north-east of Westleton
Westleton Heath offers an open-heath visit north-east of the village, with woodland and scrub adding variety around the paths. Natural England names Tree Pipit, Dartford Warbler and Stonechat among its birds. Suffolk County Council reports that restrictions on Westleton Heath and footpath 17 were lifted on 3 September 2026 after inspections. This is a distinct destination from the National Trust's Dunwich Heath, which remains closed. Keep the visit within the public reserve routes and follow current signs rather than extending a walk towards the neighbouring closed heath or coast. The open landscape suits patient scanning from the paths.
When to go and where to look
Dartford Warbler and Tree Pipit give Westleton a specialist heathland focus; Natural England also names Nightjar in its account of the open heath and light scrub. The cited reserve description does not assign exact months to those birds, so check its current seasonal advice when choosing a date. Scan the heath from the public paths and pause along scrub margins without approaching birds or entering vegetation. Use one of the designated car parks beside the Westleton–Dunwich road. The recorded lifting of Westleton’s restriction does not reopen neighbouring Dunwich Heath or every coastal footpath; follow the current signs and council notices.
