Vange Marsh provides a varied wetland walk close to Pitsea, combining fresh and saline water with reedbeds and grazed grassland. Avocet, Lapwing and Reed Bunting are among the birds named by the RSPB; passage waders become particularly interesting from August and Wigeon visits in winter. The viewing screen and raised mounds offer different angles across the lagoons. It is a practical option for a rail-based birding trip, but footwear matters: grassy routes can be extremely muddy and slippery in autumn and winter, with uneven patches where cattle have crossed.
