Great Amwell, near Ware · SG12 9SS

Amwell combines a broad lake viewpoint with smaller reed-fringed pools in the Lee Valley. Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust describes winter Wigeon, Gadwall and Shoveler, along with the possibility of less frequent visitors. Begin with birds already in view rather than moving immediately between hides. Comparing feeding actions on the lake is a useful introduction before listening beside the reeds. The reserve has several public approaches, but the Amwell Lane track is particularly uneven. Choose the entrance that matches your walking needs, then follow the authorised paths and viewpoint connections.
