Hanningfield Reservoir combines open-water birdwatching with woodland trails and hides near Downham. Essex Wildlife Trust identifies Gadwall, Tufted Duck and Pochard among its important autumn and winter wildfowl. The Nature Discovery Centre provides a starting point, refreshments and information on the public trails. The Lyster hide is a short distance from the centre, and other routes offer contrasting reservoir views. This entry covers the Trust's visitor reserve, rather than implying that every reservoir shore is accessible. Plan around the reserve's own access hours, which differ from the centre's opening time.

When to go and where to look

Put autumn and winter first when planning a birding visit to Hanningfield Reservoir: Essex Wildlife Trust identifies those seasons for the important wildfowl numbers behind its SSSI designation. Pochard, Gadwall and Tufted Duck are named targets on the open water. Enter through the Nature Discovery Centre and choose the public hides for different reservoir views; the Lyster hide is close to the centre. Woodland trails offer a sheltered link between watching positions. The visitor reserve does not give access to every shore. Compare reserve access hours with centre opening times and finish your circuit before the gates close.
