Blue House Farm Chase, North Fambridge · CM3 6GU

Blue House Farm offers an extensive marshland visit on the north side of the River Crouch. Essex Wildlife Trust identifies winter Brent Geese, Wigeon and Golden Plover among its seasonal birds. Spring brings displaying Lapwing and passage waders, while the county bird club describes a circular walk linking three hides with the seawall. This is a working farm as well as a reserve: use the permitted paths and allow time for exposed sections beside the estuary. The setting suits a substantial birdwatching walk rather than a quick look from a visitor-centre window.

When to go and where to look

Choose winter for the operator's named Brent Geese, Wigeon and Golden Plover, allowing plenty of time to compare flocks across the grazing marsh. In spring, the operator highlights displaying Lapwing, migrant waders and returning Yellow Wagtails. The county club's shorter circuit begins at the visitor car park, passes the three hides and returns by the public seawall. Wet winter ground can slow progress, so choose the walk to match the group rather than treating four kilometres as a fixed duration. Keep to the permitted routes, and distinguish reserve access from the separate dog-friendly public seawall.
