Carmel offers a woodland bird stop within a landscape shaped by limestone quarrying. NRW identifies Treecreeper, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Redstart among the summer birds. The marked Quarry Trail passes through deciduous woodland and returns beside a seasonal lake fed by groundwater. Bluebells and limestone grassland flowers add interest around the woodland edges. Choose this stop when you are comfortable with a strenuous walk: the route begins with a steep climb and finishes with steep steps. Keep to the path around the old quarry rather than approaching the faces, edges or former workings.
