Gatehouse of Fleet (2 mi / 3.2 km)

Carstramon Wood is a substantial broadleaved woodland north of Gatehouse of Fleet, with an oak canopy once used for charcoal and mill bobbins. The Trust includes Wood Warbler, Spotted Flycatcher and Song Thrush in its reserve wildlife selection. Maintained paths let visitors explore the wood while keeping away from the more fragile ground vegetation. Bluebells, ferns and lichens add interest beyond the birds, particularly when the canopy is quiet. Expect a varied woodland walk rather than a level promenade: the operator describes steep stretches, steps, small bridges and muddy sections.
