Newton Stewart (2 mi / 3.2 km)

Blackcraig Wood covers a steep slope beside the A75 east of Newton Stewart. Its oak, birch, ash and wych elm woodland offers a canopy to watch as well as a path through the trees. Buzzard is named in the operator overview, with Spotted Flycatcher and Song Thrush in its reserve wildlife selection. Birdwatching here should fit the narrow, uneven route: stop where the footing permits and keep clear of the steeper ground. The woodland has old lead-mine workings, steps and cliffs, making careful route choice more important than covering every part.
