West Car Park and Stevenston Point, Stevenston

Stevenston Point provides an established sea-watching position overlooking Irvine Bay and the Firth of Clyde. The county bird club names Fulmar, Gannet and Eider specifically at the Point, with a further selection of waders and ducks using the surrounding shore. Follow the public approach from the signed West Car Park and choose a sheltered land-based viewpoint. This entry concerns the Point alone: birds from the separate Auchenharvie golf-course ponds are not borrowed for its list. Beach access has an active bridge diversion, which needs respecting when choosing a walking route.

When to go and where to look

Give Stevenston Point time as a seawatch rather than treating it only as a beach walk. The county bird club describes moving seabirds across Irvine Bay, including Gannet and Fulmar, and sea ducks such as Eider. Its 2006 guide also identifies winter Long-tailed Duck and passing shearwaters and skuas, but historic rarities are not a reason to expect a particular bird today. Use the public Point approach from the signed West Car Park and compare offshore water with the shore from safe ground. Follow the current coastal-path diversion around the damaged beach bridge. The separate golf-course ponds have their own birds and are outside this entry.

Getting there: Approach from the West Car Park and use the established land-side routes to the Point. The Coastal Path operator directs walkers behind the dunes around the beach-bridge closure; do not cross the closed bridge. The pin is the published Point-area grid, not a parking bay.
