Irvine (3 mi / 4.8 km)

Gailes Marsh combines dry coastal grassland with marsh, a pond and sheltering mixed woodland near Irvine. Its reserve wildlife selection includes Reed Bunting, Snipe and Lapwing, offering a reason to look beyond the better-known beaches and golf courses nearby. The grassland is also important for pollinating insects, including mining bees. Walk carefully on the existing unsurfaced routes and leave the pond margins and wetter patches undisturbed. Horses graze the reserve from October to March, and the operator advises against dog walking during that grazing period.
