East Wretham Heath offers a varied Breckland circuit through short grassland, small lakes and old Scots pines. It is particularly appealing in spring and summer, when the operator identifies Woodlark, Nightjar, Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher among its birds. The mixture lets a visitor alternate open-heath listening with a more sheltered woodland walk. Use the public route and hides, keeping clear of any temporary restrictions for wildlife or grazing animals. The mature pine landscape is part of the site’s distinct character and contrasts with nearby younger forestry. This is a useful inland alternative when you want a different habitat from Norfolk’s coastal marshes.

When to go and where to look

At East Wretham Heath, spring and early summer bring the most useful overlap between the recorded Woodlark, Redstart and Spotted Flycatcher seasons. Nightjar adds a later summer interest, subject to the reserve's actual visiting hours. Use the public circular route to move between heath and woodland views, and consult the operator's map for the hides it lists. A named summer bird is not permission to remain after dusk or enter restricted habitat. Take time at a broad view before moving on, keeping dogs under the published control and giving breeding birds generous space.
