Birdwatching in Norfolk

Start with Norfolk’s north coast for lagoons and migration, the Wash for large waterbird flocks, or the Broads for reedbed birds. At Snettisham, selected very high spring tides bring the wader spectacle, while winter dawn can add Pink-footed Geese. Titchwell combines freshwater lagoon, reedbed, saltmarsh and beach, giving a different sequence of public watching places within one reserve. Welney is the inland washland choice for winter swans and spring breeding waders. Cley and Salthouse add lagoons, grazing marsh and shingle; Holkham combines estuary, dunes and woodland. Farther east, Strumpshaw Fen and Hickling Broad offer reed-fringed pools and wet woodland, with Bittern and other reedbed birds among the possibilities. Abbey Farm provides a shorter hide visit near Flitcham, whereas Bacton Wood offers a woodland contrast near North Walsham. Holme Dunes adds autumn Yellow-browed Warbler interest. Lynford Arboretum is the inland option for winter and early-spring Hawfinch, alongside the Broads’ spring and summer Marsh Harrier possibilities at Strumpshaw Fen.
