Lynford, near Mundford · IP26 5HW

Lynford Arboretum is a quiet woodland stop with a varied collection of trees and a strong birdwatching following. Three marked trails give a choice of walks, and the mixture of mature trees and more open ground suits slow scanning and listening. Local bird-club visits record Hawfinch, Brambling, Nuthatch and several tit species. Winter and early spring are usually useful for watching the trees before the canopy thickens. Choose this stop for woodland birds alongside a wider Breckland visit.

When to go and where to look

Winter and early spring are the main focus for Lynford Arboretum's recorded Hawfinch interest, with Brambling adding a winter possibility. Choose from the three waymarked trails rather than trying to cover every part of the site on a short visit. Pause where the public route gives a useful view of trees and feeding activity, allowing enough time to separate small movements in the branches. Nuthatch provides a broader year-round reason to enjoy the woodland even when finches are elusive. Use current Forestry England information for the permitted route, parking and any forestry restrictions before travelling. Lynford parking is cashless and ticketless.
