Portencross public car park, west of West Kilbride

Portencross offers a coastal birdwatching walk from a dedicated public car park, with rocky shore below a wooded escarpment. The county bird club names Black Guillemot, Stonechat and Fulmar along the shoreline route towards Hunterston, while the trees and scrub broaden the habitat. Begin at the road-end car park and choose how far to continue along the established track. The rough section beyond the gate is less straightforward than the tarmac arrival. Birdwatch from public routes and keep clear of power-station property or any locally restricted access.

Getting there: Follow the B7048 west from Seamill to Portencross. There is no public transport to the village itself; the Coastal Path identifies more distant A78 bus stops and West Kilbride station. The marker is the bird club’s published arrival-area grid.
