B1051 approach near Thaxted · CB10 2SA

West Wood offers a woodland birding walk near Thaxted, with coppiced rides and glades providing a varied setting. Essex Wildlife Trust names returning Blackcap, Garden Warbler and Chiffchaff as the weather warms after winter. Listen from the existing paths and allow pauses long enough to separate the different songs. The flowers and butterflies add interest when birds are less conspicuous. This is a woodland outing with limited entrance parking, rather than a large visitor attraction. Paths are unsurfaced and may become muddy after rain, so choose the distance to match the conditions and the group's footwear.
