Near Trellech, Monmouthshire

Croes Robert Wood is a working ancient woodland near Trellech, with coppiced sections, stream margins and open glades. The Trust’s spring account names blackcap, chiffchaff and great spotted woodpecker, giving the public woodland circuit a clear birding focus. Management creates trees of different ages and leaves some cut wood to support wildlife. A circular track leads through the reserve towards the charcoal kilns, with other paths branching away. This remains a hillside working wood: slopes are steep, paths can be muddy and vehicle movements have left deep ruts in places. The small entrance lay-by is the documented arrival, reached along the lane from Trellech.
