Near Newbury, Berkshire
Greenham and Crookham Commons combine extensive restored heathland with open ground and wooded valleys on the former airbase near Newbury. The Trust names woodlark, Dartford warbler and stonechat among the reserve’s birds. Broad level tracks cross the main common, while other waymarked routes reach more uneven terrain. This is one connected visitor landscape, with several public parking approaches. During the nesting season, staying on the main routes and keeping dogs on leads protects the ground-nesting birds for which the commons are important. The Control Tower gives a documented starting point, with its own opening arrangements distinct from the wider common.
When to go and where to look
Woodlark, Dartford Warbler and Nightjar are the specialist targets for Greenham and Crookham Commons, where the Trust identifies the importance of open heath for ground-nesting birds. There is no precise birding month given in its species list; the documented nesting-season safeguards run from 1 March to 31 July. Watch from the main tracks and keep dogs on leads during that period rather than entering cover to search for birds. The Control Tower makes a useful starting point, but its car park closes at variable times. Level main tracks and the more uneven wooded-valley routes are different choices, so select a route before walking.
