North-west of Newbury, Berkshire
Snelsmore Common has a distinctive mixture of heath, wet valley mires and woodland north-west of Newbury. The Trust names nightjar, woodlark and tree pipit for the reserve, with spring woodlark song specifically described. Public rights of way and waymarked trails let visitors explore different parts of this varied ground. The paved Easy Access Trail gives a shorter option; the mire and heathland routes encounter less even terrain. Ponies graze the common as part of its management. The main parking area is the appropriate arrival, and the Trust warns that there is no alternative local parking when it fills.
When to go and where to look
Spring Woodlark song is a particular reason to choose Snelsmore rather than a general woodland walk. BBOWT names Nightjar and Tree Pipit alongside Woodlark as its heathland specialities, with the breeding Nightjar linked to the heath in summer. Follow the waymarked heathland routes and listen from established paths without approaching nesting habitat. The paved 0.75-mile Easy Access Trail offers a shorter alternative, while valley mires make other routes uneven or steep. Check the B4494 car park’s posted seasonal closing time before setting out. Dogs must be on leads on the main common from 1 March to 31 July, and full gates need a RADAR key.
