Dalkeith (3 mi / 4.8 km)

Hadfast Valley is a mixture of scrub, grassland and broadleaved woodland east of Dalkeith. Summer brings migrant songbirds to breed among the insect-rich vegetation, while Yellowhammer, Willow Warbler and Tree Sparrow are named in the reserve wildlife selection. The small scale suits a quiet local visit with time spent listening at the edges of cover. Keep observation from the established access rather than stepping into scrub to follow a bird. The profile describes the arrival point more clearly than an internal path circuit, so do not assume a developed network throughout.
