Birdwatching in Buckinghamshire

By Does Your Duck Quack · Planning updated 27 October 2026

For the wetland part of a Buckinghamshire visit, College Lake and Foxcote offer different scales of watching. College Lake’s former quarry contains wetland alongside woodland, grassland and an arable-flower area. The two-mile Wildlife Walk, marked with Lapwing signs, brings these habitats into one circuit. Lapwing, Common Tern and Redshank are among the birds associated with the water, with ducks adding winter interest. This makes College Lake a useful main outing when a longer walk between several habitat views appeals. Foxcote Reservoir, near Buckingham, has a more concentrated arrangement: a permitted approach to a raised hide overlooking reeds and open water. Its winter bird selection includes Tufted Duck, Coot and Wigeon. The approach follows a slope and boardwalk, so the hide visit has its own access considerations. Church Wood changes the emphasis to trees and spring Bluebell glades near Hedgerley. The RSPB highlights Buzzard, Chiffchaff and Blackcap there. A marked circuit follows the woodland paths, including wider sections, providing a shorter woodland alternative to the lake and reservoir visits.
