Best time to visit and seasonal birds

A booked session remains sensible; the panoramic field lacks the shelter offered by a standard hide when showers arrive. September: typically watch Red Kite from Standard Hide 1. The operator returns to a more restricted open-day pattern. Check the calendar before arranging travel and compare standard admission with separate specialist-hide charges rather than assuming one includes the other. October: typically watch Red Kite from Standard Hide 1. The return to GMT changes the advertised feeding time to 14:00. Wind direction can affect photographic choices: the operator specifically favours southerly wind for the separately booked Low Level Hide. November: typically watch Red Kite from Standard Hide 1. The 2026 calendar closes Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in November. Short daylight makes timely arrival useful, but a winter feeding session never gives permission to search for a night roost. Opening times, entry and facilities

Gigrin's 2026 ticket pages list adult admission at £12, age 65-plus £10, children aged 4–15 £7.50, children aged three and under free, and a two-adult/two-child family ticket at £37. Parking and the booked standard viewing place are included. The revised opening page labels its tariff 2026/27 and adds unexplained bracketed amounts (£13 adult, £11 senior, £8 child and £39 family). It does not identify the changeover date: check the dated booking total before paying rather than assuming either amount applies to 2027. The published timetable runs 12.30pm–5pm on opening days. January is weekends only, excluding New Year's Day; February–July and September–October normally run Saturday–Wednesday, with school-holiday additions. August opens daily. November 2026 excludes Wednesday as well as Thursday and Friday. December opens at weekends through the 20th and daily on 28–31 December, closing 21–27 December. Check the operator's booking calendar before travelling because individual dates can change. The coffee/gift shop closes at 3.30pm in winter, 4.30pm in spring and autumn, and 5pm in August.

Trails, hides and visit length

Start with the booked viewing location: Gigrin is a working farm with a managed wildlife event, and the field beyond the visitor areas is not a walking route. The five standard hides offer a low, close view through long openings, while the viewing field gives a wider impression of birds gathering above the feeding area. Choose the view you want during booking; moving between booked hides during the action risks disturbing other visitors. The waymarked farm walk begins at the viewing field and finishes near the standard hides after a wooded section. The operator suggests 30–45 minutes. Use it for the surrounding hill views and a quieter change of pace, keeping clear of sheep and supervising children beside open water. Pause before entering the woodland so birds have time to return to their normal activity. The walk complements the feeding session; it is not a route onto the feeding field itself. Two-hour plan: reach the farm with a comfortable margin before the session, find your allocated seat and first watch the sky without a camera. Spend the feeding period following one kite at a time, then compare the behaviour of ravens and buzzards once the first rush subsides. Finish with refreshments or a short look from the permitted visitor area rather than attempting the farm walk against a tight departure deadline. Full-day plan: spend the morning independently exploring Rhayader, then make the farm the afternoon anchor. On the farm, take the waymarked walk before settling into the viewing place, leaving plenty of time for the session. Afterwards, remain for the slower flights and visit the shop before its seasonal closing time. This editorial itinerary combines a town morning with the afternoon attraction; Gigrin's visiting window does not cover a conventional dawn-to-dusk reserve day.

Feeding times, hides and booking

Times: Food is put out at 2pm GMT in winter and 3pm BST in summer, changing with the clocks at the end of March and October. The operator requests arrival at least 15 minutes before feeding; wildlife may take longer to approach.

Hides: Choose one of five standard hides or the panoramic viewing field when booking. Specialist Gateway, Tower, Low Level and Big Tower hides are separate photography options.

Booking: Book through the farm’s official TryBooking link. Online sales close at 11am on the visit date; visitor capacity is limited.

Prices: 2026 photography-hide rates: Gateway £32, Tower £42, Low Level £40 and Big Tower £47 per person. The 2026/27 page also shows £35, £45, £45 and £50 in brackets without an effective date; confirm the selected date’s total.

Accessibility and step-free routes

The operator identifies standard hides 2, 3 and 5 as ramped and wheelchair friendly. Visitors with mobility difficulties can request parking immediately beside the hides; arrange that with the farm beforehand so the correct approach is clear. The normal farmyard parking is approximately 130 metres from the hides. This proximity can make a stationary birdwatching visit practical without committing to the separate walk. The farmyard is surfaced in tarmac but slopes in places. There is an accessible toilet in the yard. Indoor and outdoor seating can accommodate wheelchairs, and the two ground-floor coffee/gift-shop areas have separate accessible entrances. The upper floor is reached by steps. Narrower spaces in the historic farm buildings may matter to larger mobility equipment, so describe the size of your chair when arranging a visit. The farm walk has muddy, uneven ground and the operator advises that it is unsuitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs or visitors with mobility difficulties. A hide-only visit is therefore the more useful option for many people. The open viewing field has chairs and benches but no weather shelter; a covered hide offers a different level of comfort. Published information does not give ramp gradients or doorway widths; contact the farm before booking if those measurements determine whether you can use the chosen space.

Public transport and getting there

For a car-free visit, take a Heart of Wales Line train to Llandrindod Wells and connect with Celtic Travel's X47 towards Rhayader. Traveline Cymru publishes the current X47 between Llandrindod Wells and Llangurig via Newbridge and Rhayader. Match the return service to the feeding session before buying attraction tickets, particularly for a weekend or holiday journey; an arrival that technically reaches town may still leave too little time to reach the farm. Visit Wales gives the onward walk from Rhayader's Dark Lane bus stop as 0.9 miles (1.45 km). The farm lies off South Street above town, so leave additional time for the uphill approach and for reaching the booked hide. A pre-arranged taxi from Llandrindod Wells or Rhayader is a useful alternative if the walking gradient or bus connection is unsuitable. Do not assume a bus enters the farm: X47 is the town connection. Drivers should use the operator's visitor address and follow signs off South Street rather than searching for the feeding field across neighbouring farmland.
