May birdwatching in the UK
May is our choice for a first serious spring birding break: woodland song, reedbed voices and seabird colonies offer very different days. Start early, choose one habitat at a time and keep breeding birds undisturbed.

What makes May special for birdwatching
May's strength is the combination of returning birds and conspicuous behaviour. Woodland migrants typically add new voices to resident song, reedbeds become noisier and seabird colonies offer movement on a much larger scale. The temptation is to combine all three in a single day. Our advice is the opposite: choose one as the main event and let the others belong to another outing. Listening properly takes time, and so does learning to read a busy cliff.
Arrivals are still influenced by weather, and the timing of a particular bird on a particular reserve varies. A page naming May is describing a useful window, not an appointment. Early and late parts of the month may feel quite different, especially between southern lowlands and northern sites. Plan around a habitat you want to understand, with several possible birds of interest. That gives the trip a purpose even when the species you most hoped for remains out of view.

Carry water, protection from sun and enough insulation for a stationary coastal watch. Warm weather on a sheltered path does not describe conditions at a windy viewpoint. Tide planning remains useful for estuaries and coastal wetlands. Check the official reference used by the reserve and understand whether the viewpoint is best for feeding birds, resting birds or both. Do not approach a roost simply because the birds are concentrated and apparently easy to photograph. Seasonal restrictions may protect nesting areas that look empty to a visitor.
